What's typically involved

Diagnostic is the most undervalued service in the trade. A lot of shops will quote you a repair before they've actually found the problem. Our diagnostic process below is what we do BEFORE we tell you what something costs to fix.

  • Full OBD-II scan plus manufacturer-specific code read on the relevant ECU(s)
  • Live data review — fuel trims, sensor voltages, knock counters, transmission temperatures, anything the symptom points at
  • Drive cycle if needed to reproduce intermittent symptoms
  • Visual and physical inspection of the suspect systems — vacuum lines, electrical connectors, exhaust, intake
  • Written report of findings with the actual root cause, not just a code list
  • Diagnostic fee credited against repair work if you go forward with us

What affects your final price

We don't publish dollar amounts because they'd be wrong half the time. The factors below are what actually drive the quote on a 2003 Honda Civic:

  • Symptom complexity — a stored P0420 is faster than an intermittent rough idle
  • How many systems we have to test (engine + transmission + electrical can take longer)
  • Whether the vehicle has manufacturer-specific scanner requirements
  • Whether the diagnostic includes a road-test component

A note on this vehicle

European vehicles often need manufacturer-specific scan tools to read deep system codes. We have what's needed for most makes; rare or specialty vehicles occasionally route through a partner shop for the deepest diagnostic work.
