What's typically involved

Differentials get ignored until they make noise. By then it's expensive. Scope below is what's typical on a fluid service or small repair; full rebuilds are larger projects we quote separately.

  • Drain and inspection of fluid for metal shavings — small flakes are normal, large pieces are a problem
  • Pinion seal inspection for leaks, replacement if torn
  • Case and gasket inspection for external leaks
  • Refill with the correct fluid spec for your vehicle (LSD additive if you have a limited-slip)
  • Road test at the speeds where the symptom shows up — typically 35-65 mph for most diff issues

What affects your final price

We don't publish dollar amounts because they'd be wrong half the time. The factors below are what actually drive the quote on a 1999 Toyota Camry:

  • Front, rear, or both differentials being serviced
  • Whether there's a transfer case (4WD/AWD) that needs simultaneous service
  • Limited-slip versus open differential — LSD additive is an extra step
  • Whether the work is a fluid service, a seal replacement, or a full rebuild
  • Vehicle weight class — heavy-duty trucks have larger diffs, more fluid, often more expensive parts

A note on this vehicle

Trucks, four-wheel-drive SUVs, and Subarus see the most diff work in our shop. Service intervals matter more than people realize on these vehicles — a $200 fluid service can save a $2,000 rebuild.
