If you're staring down a transmission repair quote, take 90 seconds to make sure that's actually what's wrong. At Don's Garage in Denver we see customers walk in convinced their transmission is failing — and a real diagnostic shows a worn CV joint ($300 fix), a torque converter shudder that a fluid service handles, a broken motor mount that costs less than a tire rotation, or fluid that just needed to be changed.

This quiz walks through the same first-line diagnostic questions we'd ask if you called the shop. Family-owned since 1970, three generations of mechanics — we've seen every flavor of "I think it's my transmission" there is. Answer honestly and we'll tell you what the symptoms most likely point to.

Is your transmission really failing — or is it a $300 fix?

1. When does the problem happen?
2. What does it sound or feel like?
3. When did you last have your transmission fluid serviced?
4. Have you checked the fluid level and color?
5. Is there a Check Engine or transmission warning light on?
6. Does the symptom change when you…
7. How many miles is the car?

Common misdiagnoses we see at the shop.

Real customers, real symptoms, real outcomes. Names changed but the cars and the diagnoses are exactly what walked in the door.

Customer thought: "My transmission is slipping." Reality: bad inner CV joint.

2014 Honda Accord, 138,000 miles. Owner came in convinced she needed a transmission rebuild — felt a shudder when accelerating from a stop, and another shop had quoted her $3,400 for a rebuild. Five-minute test drive: shudder only at acceleration, disappeared once rolling, no symptoms cruising. Inner CV joint diagnosis. Total bill: $390. Saved her $3,000.

Customer thought: "My transmission is going out." Reality: torque converter clutch.

2011 Chevy Silverado, 180,000 miles. Owner described "rumbling like driving on a rumble strip" between 35 and 50 mph. Classic torque converter shudder. We confirmed by tapping the brake during the shudder — symptom disappeared instantly. Fluid + filter service plus torque converter clutch replacement: $1,100. The original quote from another shop: $4,800 for a full transmission rebuild. Saved him $3,700.

Customer thought: "Transmission is clunking." Reality: broken motor mount.

2008 Toyota 4Runner, 195,000 miles. Owner felt a hard clunk every time he shifted from Drive to Reverse. Hood-up, engine idling, put it in drive — engine rocked forward visibly. Broken upper motor mount. Replacement: $385. The shop he came from had quoted $4,500 for a transmission rebuild. Saved him $4,100.

Customer thought: "Transmission is shot." Reality: 60,000 miles overdue on fluid.

2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 142,000 miles. Owner reported delayed shifts, rough engagement, and what felt like slipping. Pulled the dipstick — fluid was nearly black and smelled burnt. He'd never had it serviced. Fluid + filter service + a 50-mile drive: shifts back to normal. $340 total. Saved him whatever the next shop would have quoted.

Customer thought: "Maybe it's the transmission?" Reality: yes, this time.

2007 Ford Explorer, 219,000 miles. Owner described slipping in 3rd gear, RPMs flaring, and a transmission warning light. Fluid was bright red — recently serviced. Diagnostic confirmed internal wear, specifically a failing 3-4 clutch pack. Repair: $2,800 (partial rebuild, not full). We told him straight, gave him the partial-rebuild option, and he's still driving it three years later. Sometimes the answer really is the transmission — and we'll tell you when it is.
